Tip #1 for Making it Meaningful
This is a no brainer: it’s easy, it’s super impressive and it’s FREE!!
Although it is one of the most simple ways to make your wedding day meaningful, many couples do not take the opportunity to toast their parents and their guests. I expect better from a Zella! Preparing and offering a meaningful toast is a great way to melt your parents hearts and dazzle your guests. Regardless of your relationship with your families, you and your partner should publicly acknowledge them and give them props for getting you to where you are today.
So what do you need to do, and how do you do it?
You Gotta:
1. Prepare it. Please don’t think you can get up and “wing it” on your wedding day. You will very likely say too little or too much. It is best to give it some thought and write it down.
2. Be truthful. There are many websites out there to guide you in the process, or from which you can copy toasts. These can be helpful is getting the creative juices flowing, but it’s best to craft a toast that is true to your personality and your relationships. One especially helpful article is this one at about.com. Check it out!
3. Practice it. This is well worth your time! I know, I know: it may feel a little cheesy. But practicing your toast with your partner will make the Big Day easy-peasy, especially if you are not comfortable with public speaking. Stand in your living room with your partner at your side and face forward, just as if you were addressing your guests. Pretend you have a mic in your hand and practice your speech. You can have fun: play around with the toast and work with it until it feels right.
Need a little help getting started? Here are some brainstorming ideas:
1. What do you admire about your parents?
2. Do you share any quirky habits or traits?
3. Do you have a favorite memory or story from childhood?
4. What is a tradition or value that your parents’ taught you that you look forward to sharing with your children?
“Here’s to all the Zellas in the house!”
